CRICKETS ATE THE MOON

An award-winning play by Charli Fool Bear-Vetter '15

Directed by Laura Calderon '19

Produced by Danica Rodriguez '18 and Christian Dane Williams '19

Performances will be April 21 and 22 in the Bentley Theater.

Crickets Ate the Moon tells the story of Celena Bear Spirit, a 21 year old Native American woman, fighting against suppressed trauma and depression. Defiantly optimistic, Lena strives to keep herself and her family afloat despite the consuming nature of her illness. Crickets Ate the Moon speaks to erasing stigma against mental illness and the powerful resilience of Native women.

Characters:

CELENA (Lena): 21, an optimist struggling to stay afloat despite her overwhelming depression and trauma. Cares intensely for her brothers and not burdening to her family.

THE FRIEND female, early twenties. Personifies the malicious depression Lena faces. Only Cruel and manipulative, only Lena can see her.

BEN:  25, loves community theater who meets Lena at auditions. Endlessly kind, he recognizes and admires Lena's strength and beautiful soul.

CATHERINE: Lena's grandmother. The rock of the Bear Spirit family. She is warm and kind, while also straightforward with her family. No one disrespects her.

STEVIE, Lena's mother. Scared that Lena will follow her path. Wants the best for her children but is also overwhelmed and headstrong.  

DEAN: 18, Lena's brother. Athletic, overprotective of his family. Struggles with his academic future out of fear of failing.

JAMES: 16, Lena's youngest brother. Smart, charming and funny, he has secrets of his own. Is quick to snap at someone who pushes his sore spots.

 

****AUDITION INFORMATION***

Auditions times/dates:

Friday, April 7, from 3:30 PM to 6:30 PM and Monday, April 10, from 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM.  Auditions will be held in 219 Wilson.

The audition will consist of reading selected scenes from the play. The rehearsal time commitment will be depend on the schedule of students cast in the production - rehearsals will begin this weekend.
