About our Production Program
Theater is one of the oldest undergraduate activities at Dartmouth. Our production program is built on a tradition dating back as far as 1779. The first Director of Theater was appointed by the College in 1928 and the Department of Drama was formally established in 1967. We changed our name to the Department of Theater in the spring of 2001 to better reflect our mission.
Many production opportunities are available each year. We do a faculty- or professionally-directed MainStage each fall and winter, one of which is a musical every other year. We also have any number of productions directed and designed by students each term. Production involvement, both onstage and backstage, is open to all Dartmouth students, regardless of major or the courses in which one is enrolled.
Auditions for both MainStage and student productions are held at the beginning of each term. All undergraduate students are welcome to participate in departmental productions, regardless of major or course of study. We post updated information about production opportunities on this site regularly, as well as in Shakespeare Alley.
