ABOUT THE PLAY AND THE PRODUCTION

Set in 1974 Brooklyn, New York, "Umma" follows the story of a young Black woman striving to really see herself and redefine what it means to love someone without losing her own identity. Umma dreams of opening her own record store but cannot get signed approval for a lease with the bank unless her estranged partner, Johnny, decides to be her co-signer. Umma and Johnny had been living in the same apartment off Fulton Street together for five long years and have forgotten what it means to love one another the way they did back when they'd met in music school. Just six months ago, Umma left Johnny because she could no longer recognize herself with him. But now, Umma and Johnny must reconnect on one fateful evening to discuss the record store. Umma knows that her heart still belongs to Johnny. And Johnny is still madly in love with Umma. So… what will happen when Johnny comes to Umma's new place after not seeing her for 6 months? You'll have to come and see to find out!

Umma is an original two-person radio play written by Stella Amuzu Asa '22. Rehearsals will begin the week of February 1; anticipated time commitment no more than 4 hours/week, likely split over two days each week. The final performance will be streamed during the last week of February (performance platform TBD; likely YouTube and/or Dartmouth College Radio), with recordings most likely taking place the previous week. No memorization will be required.

CHARACTER BREAKDOWN/AVAILABLE ROLE

JOHNNY: White man in his late twenties/early thirties. Johnny grew up in Queens, NY and met Umma during his last year at NYU Tisch. He's a drummer in a jazz band. Has a quiet warmth and kindness about him that's tempered by his underlying social anxiety. Johnny stands at 6'5'' and sometimes has a habit of hunching. Still deeply in love with Umma and willing to do whatever it takes to get her back. Smokes cigarettes often because of his anxiety. Can be described as the opposite of Umma. This role is open to a male/male-identifying performer.

The role of Umma will be performed by the playwright.
