Master Dyer

Joan Morris, who has worked for the Theater Department for the past thirty-one years, is an internationally known artist specializing in shibori, or shaped-resist dyeing. Her work has been shown in Asia, Europe and the United States. When not working at Dartmouth, she teaches nationally and internationally.  Since 1997 she has been creating textiles for Julie Taymor’s award winning Broadway production of The Lion King as well as its international venues and road productions. Joan is a co-inventor (with Michele Ratte, D '78) of a printing process allowing precious metals to be printed on textiles. Her studio practice is centered around a merger of shaped-resist dyeing and printing.
