Calling all Dartmouth Students! The Dartmouth Theater Department and Northern Stage, an award winning professional theater, will present a groundbreaking experiential (or “E”) term for five to six exceptional Dartmouth Students in the fall of 2016.
The students will be housed with the Northern Stage Company, trained for 15 weeks in all aspects of the professional theater, and take part in Northern Stage’s Off-Broadway production of Orwell in America as well as the company’s highly lauded production of A Christmas Carol. The E-term Company, as the students will be called, will be mentored by the Northern Stage Artistic and Managing Directors, company members and guests. Students will also participate in weekly classes and career preparation seminars led by Northern Stage professionals.
The New York production of Orwell in America will serve as the centerpiece for the immersive term. Students will participate in rehearsals and performances in Hanover beginning early September 2016, travel to New York City to continue their work as part of the production team during the Off-Broadway run, and then return to the Northern Stage in November to perform additional duties, including possible acting assignments, on the production of A Christmas Carol. The students’ E-term experience would conclude with the final performance of the holiday show. The Dartmouth faculty recognizes that there are few, if any, undergraduate programs in the United States that offer this kind of top-tier professional, hands-on training experience to their students. This opportunity for experiential learning makes Dartmouth unique among its peer institutions and will help to maintain the College’s reputation as having one of the finest undergraduate theater programs in the United States. To participate in the training of the next generation of theater artists is also a fundamental component of Northern Stage’s educational mission. Through this proposed collaboration, the Theater Department at Dartmouth College and Northern Stage will deepen their impact on our shared community and take a major step toward becoming a model of excellence for the American theater.

Orwell in America – the Play:
“In the first years after World War II, George Orwell, author of Animal Farm is chaperoned on an American book tour by a fetching young woman, provided by the publisher, whose job is to dissuade Orwell from telling America why he is a proud socialist. This beautiful, smart, and thought-provoking drama was first presented in a staged reading at Northern Stage's inaugural New Works Now festival in 2014 and in a full production in 2015 to great audience and critical acclaim.” - Broadway World.com
