See this note from General Manager Jason Schumacher about Hamlet's Opening Night:
Thank you to everyone who has raised concerns about the opening night of Hamlet being the same night as the Homecoming Weekend bonfire. The Department of Theater recognizes the importance of this tradition, particularly to the first-year students, and we're grateful that many of you voiced your concerns to faculty and staff.
Because Homecoming occurs on the calendar later than usual, we are faced with a challenging situation.
The department has weighed all options in an attempt to balance the academic goals of the faculty, the production needs of the staff, the expectations of our audience, and the desire of students to participate in a beloved tradition. Taking into consideration all these factors, we have decided on a course of action that we believe is the best possible approach for all involved.
We will attempt to move the opening night performance from a 7:30pm start time to a 4:30pm start time. This will mean that cast and crew will need to arrive at the theater at 3:00pm for what is known as the "call time".
Because changing the schedule requires starting our preshow work during regular class times, we won't be able to confirm this change in the schedule until after the show is cast. Once the show is cast, we will review all class schedules. For any student who has a class that conflicts with a 3:00pm call time on that Friday, November 1, department chair Professor Kotlowitz will reach out to the faculty teaching that class and attempt to make arrangements that allow the student to miss that class. Once Professor Kotlowitz has confirmed with other faculty that these arrangements are acceptable, we will confirm the schedule change for an earlier start time.
To allow students who are interested in auditioning based on this possible change in the schedule, we are adding audition slots to this evening's schedule. There are slots available for first auditions from 6:00 – 7:30pm tonight, Friday, September 20. If you are interested in auditioning for Hamlet tonight and have not already auditioned, please fill out the audition form. Here is the link to the form.
PLEASE NOTE, although the department will make every effort to reschedule the opening night performance to an earlier time to allow students to participate in the bonfire, we will not be able to confirm this until AFTER the show is cast. It is still possible that the cast and crew of Hamlet will not be able to attend the bonfire.
We appreciate your grace and understanding. Please feel free to reach out to me if you have any questions or concerns, whether about Hamlet or anything else.
With kind regards,
Jason Schumacher (he/him)
