The NYTW consistently creates opportunities for talented theatre artists to thrive, working to build long-term relationships with these artists. They offer well-rounded, long-term support to playwrights and directors, creating an environment that is conducive to the growth of their ideas, projects, careers, and visions of themselves as artists. The Dartmouth residency is an integral part of that process. Incubated within a community of fellow artists, audience members, and Dartmouth students, artists are able to take advantage of a unique opportunity to develop and expand their creative work.

The NYTW's multi-faceted, three-week residency at Dartmouth was developed for both established and emerging artists. The residency involves six theatrical works-in-progress in development by visiting writers, directors, composers, dramaturgs, performers, and others - all of whom are at the forefront of the professional theatre. Recent participants have included Denis O'Hare, Sharon Washington, Doug Wright, Dael Orlandersmith, Anais Mitchell, Ed Sylvanus Iskandar, Rachel Chavkin, Ayad Akhtar, Jeremy O. Harris, and others.

The NYTW will be in residence at Dartmouth in August 2022, marking their 31st year at the College. Among the dozens of pieces that have been workshopped and developed at Dartmouth during that time are Rent, The Laramie Project, Quills, An Iliad, and Hadestown.
