John Heginbotham honored with a 2018 Guggenheim Fellowship

The Department of Theater is delighted to share the news that our colleague and friend Professor John Heginbotham has been named a 2018 Guggenheim Fellow in the field of Choreography.

Since 1925, the The John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation has offered Fellowships to further the development of scholars and artists by assisting them to engage in research in any field of knowledge and creation. Guggenheim Fellows are appointed on the basis of past achievement and exceptional promise for future accomplishment. The Foundation receives approximately 3,000 applications each year, and roughly 175 Fellowships are awarded each year.

Originally from Anchorage, Alaska, Professor Heginbotham graduated from The Juilliard School in 1993 with a BFA in Dance. From 1995-1998, he was a member of Susan Marshall & Company, and from 1998-2012 he toured the United States and abroad with the Mark Morris Dance Group. In 2011, John founded Dance Heginbotham (DH), a performance group devoted to the presentation of his dance and theatrical work. The company had its world premiere at The Kennedy Center and has since been presented and commissioned by the Brooklyn Academy of Music, Jacob's Pillow Dance Festival, Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and many others. John is the recipient of the 2014 Jacob's Pillow Dance Award and numerous other Fellowships. A frequent collaborator, he has worked with numerous and diverse artists and ensembles; he is also very active as a freelance choreographer of contemporary dance, ballet, theater, and opera.

At Dartmouth, he teaches THEA 28: Dance Composition, and, with his colleague Rebecca Stenn, THEA 29: Dance Theater Performance. He also directs the Dartmouth Dance Ensemble.
